Selected for OPEN -Birmingham Art Prize at the Birmingham Museum and Gallery i 2010 from my ' A day at the Races' project. It's about identity in Britain especially in the equine world , there are tribes in society, but some tribes have a marked hierarchy and the Racing fraternity is very complex,

    Ladies Day

Royal Ascot image selected for the International Color Awards and the AoP open awards. It was shot at Royal Ascot on Ladies day 2006 and was the start of an extended project that was titled 'A day at the Races' I have since found out that a certain Martin Parr was also working on a similar project and he also called it 'A day at the Races' Great minds etc? . I'm sure he will be ok about it, but I think I was there first? He seems to be doing ok?

'A Day at the Races' the project was started at Royal Ascot and then I decided to attend the major Racing days, of the Grand National at Aintree, The Derby at Epsom and the Cheltenham the Festival, this image as you can image is from the later, the town of Cheltenham and the surrounding areas become Irish, a wonderful celebration of the Festival that kicks off the year in great style and lots of Guinness !

At Epsom - the symbol of hats can signify so much, it is the job of a photographer to use such symbols too commuicate a message about the subject or the event, sometimes an image like this can be confusing but with context, it makes sense, especuially if its seen with the images in the series, the body of work is the commuication, occassionaly a single image can sum up the whole and those iconic images may go on to become classics? In todays internet fog, such images maybe lost, its only with the help of publication in print, shall an image become famous and endure, digital distribution may do it for a News image or even an award will elevate it, it's complicated as they say.

    Reportage Photographer

Royal Ascot -Ladies Day . A reportage or documentary approach to many projects and commissions produces images that provide a sense of place and time .Often these are editorial in style, however, the style can be used for Commercial application .Lifestyle photography is often used as a way to define this approach to Commercial work but I prefer reportage or documentary. It is often used at events and it's style is really documentary photography .

There are exclusive enclosures at many events and at the Derby the re were those barriers of welth and privelidge that seperated the public from those who had access to the inner circle, hopefully this image may commuicate that?

Arriving at this small beach at midday ,I was stuck with light that is less than ideal , However employing a very high shutter speed to allow a wide aperture ,I captured this image that I believe works as it has a soft background for type and does not distract from the wonderful graphics on the boat . I would love to have taken the painted Lion and used it as a painting ? This art is part of the beauty that is the Cape Verde Islands,a destination well worth exploring .As a travel photographer ,it has to be one of my favorite locations ,still unexploited.

Commissioned as a limited edition 'Poster' this beautiful dog was orginally going to be photographed on large format in colour, much more my style at the time, however the Dartmoor weather dictated a diffrent approach and I returned to my pure 'documentary' style with a Nikon F2 & a 35mm lens, a stunning print from Keith Taylor then at Metro and the final 100 prints were made on fine art paper and distributed to a select mailing list, the image was selected for the AFEAP awards (Now the AOP) and still one of my all time personal favorites.

Reportage & Events

Reportage photography is often used for PR and editorial use, often this work is self instigated but magazines and many media employ it for visual communication.

Travel and hospitality photography is often used to describe this 'genre' but in the context of working in the Warwickshire & Cotswolds, this style of work maybe called 'Event'photography, either way I approach it as it is required with what does it needs to communicate? I

t is important to know how the images are going to be used, as a PR asset or for social media that the client controls. often the work is self instigated and could be seen as fine art, certainly with my 'Day at the Races' project the results were exhibited in Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery for the West Midlands Open in 2010.
